The Botulinum A toxin, is a neuromodulator that provides a temporary paralysis of muscles. As the neurotoxin travels through the dermis into the targeted muscle, it blocks the synapse, impeding nerve stimulation to the muscle. This treatment diminishes unwanted fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox is a neuromodulator consisting of the botulinum A toxin, surrounded by albumin proteins. Results are seen within 7-14 days, and lasts 3-4 months on average.

Xeomin, a product similar to Botox, contains the botulinum A toxin, but lacks the surrounding albumin proteins, providing a more purified product. Results can be seen as soon as the 4th day, but may take up to 14 days for full effect. Xeomin lasts 3-4 months on average.

Dysport, another botulinum A neuromodulator, is supported by a lactose protein. Due to unit conversion, Dysport requires 2-3 times that of Botox or Xeomin, with results being seen as soon as 24 hours, and lasting 3-4 months on average.


Neurotoxins are injected directly into certain muscles in order to modulate the chemical response that triggers muscle contraction. When injected into a muscle, the neurotoxin relaxes it, and minimizes movement in order to smooth the appearance of the overlying skin, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. The specific neurotoxin used is the botulinum A toxin. The three main neuromodulators, all containing the botulinum A toxin, include Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport.

Neurotoxins are primarily used in three main locations on the face which include the glabella (for the lines between the eyebrows known as the “11’s”), the forehead, and crow’s feet (smile lines around eye corners). Other areas that are now being treated include the upper lip for perioral rhytides (“smoker’s lines”), eyebrows to produce a mild lift, and platysmal bands in the neck.

Neurotoxins are administered by units. The number of units required for treatment will depend on the area, degree of muscle strength, and desired end goal. Some individuals are interested in a “frozen” appearance which will require more units in order to inhibit all muscle movement in the designated area. Others prefer a more “natural” appearance, choosing to maintain some movement in the area, and therefore requires a lesser amount of units.

Results are seen within 10-14 days after treatment. On average, the results will last 3-4 months. This will vary on an individual basis as some will metabolize the product more quickly or slowly.

There is little to no down time with neurotoxin injections. Immediately following the treatment, individuals should not rub the treated area, exercise, lay down, or enter into a sauna or hot tub for 4-6 hours. Side effects can include soreness at the injection site, minor bruising, as well as a temporary headache.
